GuangMo is a school located in the economic development zone of Chengdu, aims to teach children to realize the beauty of life, grow up with changes of solar terms, and explore freely in nature. In order to create a place that integrates culture and aesthetics, and to think about education based on humanity, GuangMo school commissioned CROX to transform the indoor and outdoor spaces of the campus and truly give children opportunities to get closer to the land. The original building is an office workshop divided into two floors. How to use the space to ensure selfeducation became the primary problem with design. Eventually CROX decided to start with the concept of “circling”. Circle, representing nature, harmony and completeness. Arc combinations of different sizes can add children’s tiff to the space. The circle of GuangMo, is the dot also the origin, is the beginning of circle also the primitive, the children’s future starts from this, starts from the nature, starts from the ego.

Following the circle stepping stones to GuangMo, children can have a closer contact with nature in the outdoor environment with full of grass, sunshine, earth, sand and stones, and have a variety of interesting experiences. The different functions and sizes of children’s amusement facilities ensure the diversity of interests and ensure that children of all ages can find new inspirations here. Bunker, stepping stones, plants with four distinct seasons provide a variety of education methods. Teachers in school often take children to do things themselves, playing with sand, pinching mud, planting trees, picking fruit, getting close to nature and releasing their authenticity. The presence of hand washing bowl allows children to develop habits of cleaning after playing and adds a sense of tranquility to the school. Here, the plants with four seasons let children feel the coming and going of different solar terms directly.

Before the renovation, the corridor of GuangMo school has been in a closed state, cut off communication with seasons and people. CROX breaks though the external walls broadly with circles so that all the beauty of nature is able to pass through the space such as sunshine, wind, rain and sounds. The nature freely talk to children and gives them inspiration in the corridor. With the change of seasons, the location and intensity of lights and shadows, outdoor scenery, temperature and sounds are all different from each other. No matter where in the school, children can experience the change of seasons and solar terms, and have a deeper understanding of the culture of traditional cultivation and reading.

Every classroom designed by CROX is equipped with a dining room, a bedroom and a bathroom, which is like another home for children to relax after having a good time. In the garden, there are multi-functional classrooms, parent-child handicraft rooms and semi-outdoor activity rooms that introduce outdoor landscape. Whether it is to hold traditional festival celebrations or to celebrate a child’s birthday, you can find suitable place in GuangMo. Every space is connected with nature. When children open the windows, they reach out and touch the wind.

Large french windows bring outdoor beauty and joy into the classroom. Children can create freely on the shades, enlighten the mind, connect the imagination with nature. The tables, chairs, beds, indoor lamps and other appliances of GuangMo are all specially designed for children. Wooden furniture enhances the affinity with the environment to the person, and chamfer and curved design,
the application of indirect light, let the children release nature to the top of their bent while feeling the softness of nature. The configuration of circular arc also echoed loving school. The light membrane in the classroom are like a luminous cloud. When it shines, like there is daylight pouring down, children can bathe in the natural brilliance even in the room.

With every circle, CROX hopes to give every child a passage through the nature and himself. They don’t need to stick to any rules, but can develop their own thoughts to cultivate and stimulate their independent initiative and self-exploration, and finally return to harmony, nature, primitive and circle of life.
