Nanjing was the ancient capital once serving for 6 dynasties, the aftertaste of Republic of China can still be felt everywhere in the city now. Occasionnly the city feels peaceful and joyfu, just like its weather, sometimes rainy, sometimes sunny. UNI SPACE is an new united space built in Xiaguan district of Nanjing by CROX. It is located in the North Zhongshan Road in the old downtown, UNI SPACE defines a new republic style apartment for young professionals and combines with an old street vibe.

 

Dated back to the Republic of China period, North Zhongshan Road was rated as the busiest street in Xiaguan district. Time passes, however those architectures along the road stay retained is facing an new destiny of urban upgrades. Those old architectures contain full of city memorials from the past, they should not be demolished. Therefore, the relustion of transforming them into an new-type apartment is not only the rescue of the old architecture but also meets the function that people need. The concept put forward by CROX is a multi-functional space where people can live, study and have fun.

 

 

Within design: dynamic lines, overlapped space and renewed space create harmony and beauty, it merges both the old ages and new times. On the first floor, the coffee shop replaces a traditional apartment lobby. Fluid ceiling and hexagon tiles floor bring space a strong visual contrast. On second floor, the hallway brings back the street view originally existed in past, with lamps on the wall it makes you feel walking on the street. The roof is transformed into the garden platform., After being renovated, has become a multi-functional space.


 

 

There are totally 78 rooms within UNI SPACE, they have five scales ranging from 8 m2 to 22m2. In the renovation process, CROX has been committed to a design project with every room exposed to sunshine and fresh air, ensuring every apartment with big opening windows. It applies simple and rustic materials like concrete, raw lumber and white tiles, satisfying the demand of current young groups through design who are looking for space featured by freshness and nature. At the early-stage of designing, CROX has made an analysis of the behavior mode the targeted clients, dividing them into mates, singles and couples with different functional needs.

 

 


 
Concept of “ Share- living”, CROX has designed multiple public activity areas in the space, such as dining room, coffee bar, laundry, roof garden and stairway corners, Those shared spaces promotes social connections between residents. In that case, UNI SPACE is no longer the “belonging” for an individual, but a vibrant social enviroment for all. This is the new form of future social living.
