River house는 팬데믹 이후 농촌으로 이동한 주거 양상을 반영한 주택이다. WORKac는 로드아일랜드의 한 숲속, 파우카턱강(Pawcatuck River)을 따라 형성된 강변 부지에 어울리는 넷제로 패시브하우스 겸 스튜디오를 기획하였다. 지속 가능한 주택을 위한 제로 에너지 디자인의 주택으로, 대형 개구부가 데크 방향으로 완전히 열리는 공간디자인이 채택되었다. 상부 레벨에는 지붕을 비워 낸 루프 데크를 활용하였고, 이 개구부를 통해 전달되는 빛은 수직적 공간 흐름을 완성한다. 더불어 목기반 단열재를 적극적으로 사용해 환경 영향을 최소화하는 자족형 주거 작업 공간을 연출하였다. 숲과 강에 둘러싸인 River house는 닫힌 건축이라는 패시브 하우스의 선입견을 넘어 고성능 저 에너지 구조 안에서도 충분히 개방적이고, 풍경을 수용하는 삶의 가능성을 보여준 결과물이다.

The River house is a zero-energy house for sustainable housing, with a large opening fully open in the direction of the deck. The upper floor used a roof deck with an empty roof, and the light transmitted through the opening completed the vertical space flow. In addition, it actively utilized wood-based insulation to complete a selfsufficient residential workspace that can minimize environmental impact. Surrounded by forests and rivers, the river house is the result of showing the possibility of living a sufficiently open life even within high-performance, low-energy structures beyond the prejudice of being a passive house in closed-type architecture.
