싱가포르 상장사 '시티 디벨롭먼트 리미티드(City Development Limited, CDL)'가 개발하고 네덜란드 기반의 건축·도시설계 사무소 MVRDV가 외관을 설계한 ‘어웰 힐 레지던스(Irwell Hill Residences)’가 2025년 준공됐다. 단지는 MVRDV가 싱가포르 도심에 위치한 건물을 공동 개발한 첫 번째 사례다. 어웰 뱅크 로드(Irwell Bank Road)에 위치한 36층 규모의 이 주거용 타워 두 동은 싱가포르 9구역 중에서도 선호도가 높은 입지에 위치한다. 인근에 주요 관광·문화 명소가 밀집해 있는 가운데 외관의 중요성이 큰 프로젝트였다. MVRDV는 이번 ‘어웰 힐 레지던스' 프로젝트에서 싱가포르 업체 ADDP 아키텍츠의 고효율 조립식 모듈러 시스템을 기반으로, 특유의 생동감 있는 픽셀화 외관 디자인을 더해 단지의 정체성을 더욱 선명하게 부각시켰다. 이번 개발은 ADDP 아키텍츠가 공장에서 내부 마감과 외관까지 완성한 주거 유닛을 제작한 뒤, 현장에서 적층하는 조립식 프리피니시 볼륨 건설(PPVC) 방식을 적용해 설계됐다. 

Irwell Hill Residences, developed by Singapore-listed City Development Limited (CDL) and featuring an exterior designed by Netherlands-based architecture and urban design firm MVRDV, was completed in 2025. This marks MVRDV’s first co-development of a building in Singapore’s central district. The twin 36-story residential towers, located on Irwell Bank Road, occupy a highly sought-after site within Singapore’s District 9. Surrounded by major cultural and tourist destinations, the project placed particular emphasis on its architectural presence. For Irwell Hill Residences, MVRDV combined its signature dynamic, pixelated façade with the high-efficiency prefabricated modular system developed by Singaporean firm ADDP Architects, creating a visually striking identity for the development. The development employs a prefabricated prefinished volumetric construction (PPVC) method, in which ADDP Architects manufactured residential units—including interior finishes and façades—off-site before stacking them onsite.

테라스 디자인 역시 주목할 만하다. 건축가는 쿤스트카머(Kunstkammer)에서 영감을 받은 접근 방식을 활용해, 각 공간을 예술 작품 설치물처럼 구성했다. 테라스에 적용된 픽셀 그리드의 스케일과 배치는 Willem van Haecht의 〈아펠레스가 캄파스페를 그리는 장면〉(1630)과 Johan Zoffany의 〈우피치 미술관의 트리부나〉(1776) 등 역사적인 갤러리의 인스탈레이션에서 참조한 것으로, 이를 통해 예술·건축·조경 사이의 미묘한 대화를 형성한다.

The terrace design is equally compelling. The architects applied a Kunstkammer-inspired approach, arranging spaces like artworks or sculptural installations. The scale and arrangement of the pixel grid on the terraces reference historical gallery compositions, including Willem van Haecht’s Apelles Painting Campaspe (1630) and Johan Zoffany’s Tribuna of the Uffizi (1776), creating a subtle dialogue between art, architecture, and landscape.
