Thirty years in one place, then just a 15-minute walk to a new home. For Unilever, the short distance marked a significant transition—from a traditional headquarters spread across several floors to a new workplace gathered on a single level within Rotterdam’s AIR. Designed by Fokkema & Partners Architecten, the approximately 6,000-square-metre office occupies a former V&D department store, transforming a place once defined by consumption into a landscape for ideas, connection and creation.

The memory of the old building remains, while a new identity unfolds within its generous structure. Wrapped around a central atrium, the expansive floor is anchored by a raised platform, allowing people and activity to remain visually connected. Rather than dividing the workplace with rigid boundaries, greenery flows through the plan, forming pockets of a small urban forest. Planting subtly separates work and retreat, while phone booths nestle within the foliage like sculptural objects. Nature-inspired artworks and animal forms appear throughout, adding unexpected moments of discovery to the everyday.

 

약 6,000㎡ 규모의 오피스는 중앙 아트리움을 감싸는 하나의 거대한 플로어로 펼쳐지고, 중심에는 공간 전체를 조망할 수 있는 플랫폼이 자리한다. 공간 곳곳에는 작은 숲을 닮은 초록의 풍경이 펼쳐진다. Fokkema & Partners는 바이오필릭(Biophilic) 디자인을 단순한 장식이 아닌 공간을 구성하는 언어로 끌어들였다. 식물은 업무와 휴식의 영역을 부드럽게 나누고, 그 사이에 자리한 폰 부스는 마치 숲 속에 숨은 조형물처럼 풍경의 일부가 된다. 자연에서 영감을 얻은 아트워크와 동물 형상의 오브제는 예상치 못한 순간 시선을 붙잡으며 공간에 작은 이야기를 더한다.
